Who Should NOT Have Hijama? (Absolute Contraindications)
At The Hijama Academy, patient safety is our first priority. While Hijama (cupping therapy) is a natural and effective healing method practiced for centuries, it is not suitable for everyone. It’s important to understand who should avoid cupping or take precautions, and what potential health risks may arise if not performed professionally.
These clients should avoid Hijama unless cleared by a qualified medical professional:
01
People on Blood Thinners
- Patients taking Warfarin, Heparin, Aspirin, or other anticoagulants are at higher risk of excessive bleeding and delayed healing.
02
Severe Anemia (Low Hemoglobin)
- Hijama may cause weakness or dizziness in individuals with Hb levels below 10. Blood loss can worsen anemia.
03
Uncontrolled Diabetes
- Diabetics with poor wound healing or uncontrolled sugar levels are at risk of infection and complications.
04
Pregnancy (First & Last Trimester)
- Wet cupping is not advised during the first 3 months or the last 2 months of pregnancy due to the risk of early labor or complications. Dry cupping may be used carefully under supervision.
05
Bleeding Disorders
- Individuals with hemophilia, low platelets, or clotting disorders must not undergo wet cupping.
06
Cancer Patients (Undergoing Chemotherapy)
- Their immune system is suppressed, and hijama may pose a risk of infection and fatigue.
07
During Menstruation
- It is not advisable to perform Hijama during menstruation as the body is already undergoing blood loss.
08
Severe Heart Conditions
- People with uncontrolled hypertension, recent stroke, or heart failure should avoid Hijama without cardiologist clearance.
09
Fever or Active Infection
- Hijama should be delayed until the fever or infection has completely resolved.
10
Recent Surgery or Injury
- Cupping near surgical wounds or recent injuries should be strictly avoided.
Who Needs Extra Caution? (Relative Contraindications)
These individuals may be treated only with modified protocols and under supervision:
- Elderly patients (over 70)
- Children under 7 years (only dry cupping, and in special cases)
- Underweight individuals (risk of excessive fatigue)
- People with epilepsy (only after neurologist clearance)
- Skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, or infections at the site of cupping
Potential Health Risks of Hijama Therapy
When performed correctly by trained professionals, Hijama is safe. However, unqualified or unsanitary procedures may lead to the following:
1. Skin Infections
- If hygiene protocols are not followed, skin infections may develop at the cupping sites.
2. Excessive Bleeding
- Especially in patients with bleeding disorders or those on blood thinners.
3. Scarring or Hyperpigmentation
- Some patients may develop dark marks or raised scars that last weeks or months.
4. Dizziness or Fainting
- Often due to dehydration, fasting, or anemia. Always inform your therapist if you have low blood pressure.
5. Fatigue or Weakness
- Temporary tiredness is normal but excessive fatigue may indicate over-treatment.
6. Allergic Reactions
- Reaction to oils, disinfectants, or gloves used during the session.
